Appropriate Population: 

• School-age (or slightly below)

 

Goal: Use adjectives to describe and distinguish between two similar household items. Understanding prepositions Under, behind and in.

 

Steps:

1. Choose one adjective to focus on. (Just one) so rather than big and little, you would just focus on big.
   • Descriptor(s). Age of Mastery: 
   • Up and Down.                                                                  2 years
   • One/Many, Sizes (small, medium, big)                      3 years
   • Different, Colors (red, blue, etc.)                                 4 years
   • Superlatives (big, bigger, biggest),
   • Time Concepts, Thin, Whole, First, Middle, Last.   5 years
   • Opposites, Left/Right, Number Concepts.                6 years
2. Find objects in the child’s home that display this concept. it could be blocks, bowls, kitchen utensils. It is good to find two things that are relatively similar but differ just by this quality. i.e, a soup spoon and a teaspoon. As you do this you want to repeat the concept word, i.e “look a big spoon, and a spoon (the one that is smaller), big spoon for me, not big spoon for you, big cup for you, not big cup for me”. collect as many things as you can to display this concept,
3. Divide the objects  into piles, one pile displays the quality, the other does not. You can take photos of them, share them between yourselves, put them in different places in the room. i.e all the small ones on the couch, all the not small ones on the floor.
4. Have the child pass you, or point to the “big one” or the “not big one”
5. Prompt the child to say the desired word by holding the two objects and asking which the child wants. ( make a mistake and see if they correct you) if not, correct yourself.

 

Step up: 

• See if the child can pass you a requested item. I.E Pass me the big one
• Include more than one adjective in the activity, e.g incorporate a colour or shape.

 

Step down:

• Go back and repeat steps 2 and 3.
